context hazard
global threat due to environmental factors(i.e climate change)
1 of 15
geophysical hazard
a hazard formed by tectonic/geological processes (earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis)
2 of 15
hazard
a percieved natural event that has the potential to threaten life and property.
3 of 15
hydro-meteorological hazard
a hazard formed by hydrological(floods) and atmospheric (storms and droughts) processes.
4 of 15
vulnerability
a high risk combined with an inability of individuals and communities to cope
5 of 15
disaster
a ahazard becoming reality in an event that causes deaths and damage to goods/property and the environment.
6 of 15
risk
the probability of a hazard event occuring and creating loss of llves and livelihoods
7 of 15
albedo
how much solar radiation a surface reflects
8 of 15
climate change
any long term trend/shift in climate(average weather over 30 years) detected by sustained shift in the average value for any climatic element (e.g rainfall, drought, storminess)
9 of 15
enhanced greenhouse effect
occurs when the levels of greeenhouse gases in the atmosphere increase due to human activity
10 of 15
fosasil fuels
energy sources, rich in carbon, and which realise co2 when burnt (e.g coal)
11 of 15
global warming
a recently measured rise in the average surface temperature of the planet
12 of 15
greenhouse effect
the warming of the earth's atmosphere due to the trapping of heat that would otherwise be radiated back into space-it enables the survival of life on Earth.
13 of 15
tipping point
(a gameshow) jk. its the point at which a system switches from one point to another.
14 of 15
feedback mechanism
where the output of a system acts to amplify(positive) or reduce(negative) furtther output(e.g melting of the arctic permafrost leads to the release of trapped methane which leads to further global warming)
