Blank slate can learn through process of conditioning in environment. We can control and predict behaviour on the basis of causation.

Watson
The Little Albert Experiment - took 8 month old baby with no fear of rats and conditioned him to fear rats. Humans learn by process of conditioning.

Watson
Says 'I'll guarantee to take anyone at random and turn them into the specialist which I select' - we have no freewill. The government might want to control society in places like North Korea so use behaviourism.
3 of 12
Pavlov
Argued through work on stimulus and response humans are no different to animals in terms of how they respond.
4 of 12
Pavlov
Implications of freewill: learned responses to stimulus; criminals associate crime with positive feelings
5 of 12
Pavlov
Experiment where monkeys learned not to climb an electrified ladder and when a number of monkeys were swapped, remaining monkeys taught new monkeys not to climb ladder (even though it wasn't electrified)
6 of 12
Pavlov
"We don't have freewill because everything is just a learned response. I agree that most processes in humans are simply learned responses. e.g. puppy training.
7 of 12
Strengths of Pavlov
Real-life applications - evidence in world
8 of 12
Strengths of Pavlov
Can explain basic processes in humans, e.g. associating mum with food.
9 of 12
Operant Conditioning from Skinner
Use praise and blame to cause repeat behaviours. Reinforcement is required to sustain desired
10 of 12
How does Skinner explain idea by using positive reinforcement we have feeling of being free because we are doing what we want?
We don't want to be punished for doing what he wants. Therefore, we feel free as we feel we are doing what he wants us to do.

How far do you agree that society can be controlled and shaped through operant conditioning? Does this mean FW is non-existent?
Agree - evidence in society - school of justice system where process is repeated, good behaviour is rewarded. E.g more behaviour is psychologically reinforced, more we do. Disagree, people still commit crimes such as murder.
