When was the Forum built

Started 28BC, after the Battle of Actium, dedicated in 2BC, taking 26 years to build

Why was the Forum built

Suetonius tells us that the reason the Forum was built was because of a rising population that meant a rise in the number of law cases. But it could also be because he promised to avenge Caesar, and build the Temple to Mars Ultor inside the Forum

Next to Caesar's Forum, making his link to Caesar kept strong in the people of Rome's minds

The walls of the Forum were built very high to stop the spread of fire from the suburban slums that it was next to - Pepperino stone that doesn't burn

Whilst the base is made of turfa, it is clad in Carrara marbel, and the columns are made of marble - "I found Rome built in bricks, and leave her clothed in marble" - Suetonius
