Flashcards for Chemical Reactions

?
What is combustion?
Chemical reaction that occurs between a fuel and an oxidising agent; produces energy, usually in the form of heat and light.
1 of 11
How would you slow a reaction?
By decreasing the temperature, fewer particles would collide, causing fewer collisions.
2 of 11
How would you increase the reaction rate?
The concentration, temperature , surface area of a reactant(s) or a catalyst.

Examples of a chemical change:
Cooking an egg, heating sugar to form caramel, rusting of iron e.t.c

Examples of a physical change:
Mixing sand and water, breaking a glass, dissolving sugar and water e.t.c

Describe what the law of conservation of mass is.
The total mass of the products is the same as the total mass of the starting substances. Mass is conserved. Atoms are re-arranged.

Balance this equation: CH4 (g) + O2 (g)-> H2O(g) + CO2 (g)
CH4 (g) + 2O2 (g)-> 2H2O(g) + CO2 (g) - This is a combustion reaction with Methane.

What is the difference between Exothermic and Endothermic reactions?
Exothermic: temperature of the surroundings increases and energy is transferred to the surroundings. Endothermic: energy is taken in from the surroundings and temperature decreases.
8 of 11
What type of reaction is this: 2 Mg(s) + O2(g) -----> 2 MgO(s)?
Oxidation reaction

What is fermentation?
It's the conversion of sugar to alcohol by the action of yeast

C6H12O6 ---> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
Sugar + ethanol + carbon dioxide
