What are the 3 main types of finishes?
Physical finishes, Chemical finishes and Biological finishes

Why are different finishes applied to fabrics?
To alter their properties which will; change the texture, change the apperance, add strength to the fabrics and give protection against liquids

Calendaring
Favrics are layed out and are moved through heat rollers to add smoothness to the apperance and texture of the fabric

Laminating
The layers of fabric are glued together using heat

Brushing
Fabrics are layed under wire rollers making the texture of the fabric fluffy and softer

Flameproofing
Chemicals like probane are applied to act as a protective shield slowing burning process

Waterproofing
A silicon chemical is sprayed over fabric

Mercerising
Fabric is placed in a solution of strong liquid called sodium hydroxide to make the fibres appear shiny and absorbant

Shrink Resistant
A chlorine based finish is applied to fabrics to stop them from shrinking and allowing it to become machine washable

Crease Resistant
A resin is applied to fabrics

Anti-static
A chemical is sprayed over the fabric reducing electrostatic charge

Bleaching
A chemical is applied to a fabric

Anti-felting
Liquid based product is applied to soften fibres and reduce matting
