What is a participant variable?
Any characteristic of a pp. Only acts as an EV if independent groups design is used.

What are situational variables?
Features of a situation tat may influence pps behaviour.

Examples of situational variables?
Order effects, time of day, temperature, noise

What are investigator effects?
Anything that the investigator does which may have an effect on a pps performance (directly or indirectly).

What are demand characteristics?
A cue that makes pps aware of what the researcher expects to find, or how they are expected to behave.

What is the Hawthorne effect?
The tendency for pps to alter their behaviour as a result of knowing that they are being observed.

What is investigator bias?
The effect that an investigator's expectations have on the pps.
