What are the 5 main ethical issues?

Consent. Right to withdraw. Confidentiality. Deception. Protection from harm.

To ensure that research is ethical the BPS produced a code of conduct. This consists of 4 aspects:

Respect. Competence. Responsibility. Integrity.

What does respect refer to?

Consent, right to withdraw and confidentiality.

What does integrity refer to?

Researchers should be honest and accurate when reporting their research.

What does competence refer to?

Researchers should ensure high standards in their research.

What does responsibility refer to?

Research have a responsibility to their participants, society, and to science. Researchers should protect participants from harm and should debrief.

Researchers may study non-human animals. What are the 3 main reasons for this?

They offer the opportunity for greater control and objectivity in research. They can be used in research where it wouldn't be possible to use humans. Humans and animals have sufficient physiology in common to justify studying animals/generalisation.

What are 3 main ethical objections to studying non-human animals?

1. Singer - believes we have no moral right to elevate the rights of one species above another.

2. Regan - believes that the traditional scientific position on animal research treats animals as renewable sources rather than organisms of value which deserve respect.

3. Nonhuman animals are different to human animals. This means generalisation of findings would be difficult.

Due to the argument for and against research on non-human animals there are constraints placed on the use of animals. What are these?

1. Legal constraints 2. BPS guidelines 3. The three R's - reduce the number of animals, refine research procedures to minimise suffering, replace animal research with computer stimulations.
