Abstract nouns
Refers to ideas and concepts that only exists in the mind - Intangible things, like feelings, ideals, concepts, qualities. Examples: Anger, freedom, love, generosity, etc. E.g., "Fear" - you can't physically touch, feel, hear, taste, smell, see it.

Accent
1. The distinct pronunciation patterns of a group of people. 2. A distinctive way of pronouncing a language, especially one associated with a particular country, area, or social class.

Acccommodation
Where a speaker adapts to another speaker's accent, dialect or sociolect (usually through convergence).

Acronomy / Acronyms
Abbreviation (a shortened form of a word or phrase) using the first letter of a group of words and pronounced as a single word. E.g. LOL, RAM

Active Voice
When the verb of a sentence is in the active voice, the subject is doing the acting. E.g., "Kevin hit the ball." Kevin (the subject of the sentence) acts in relation to the ball.

Adjacency Pairs
A pair of utterances in a conversation that go together (greeting and reply, question and answer). Example: "How're you?" "Fine thanks".

Adjective
A word naming an attribute of a noun, e.g. "the orange sky."

Adverb
A word or phrase that modifies an adjective, verb, or other adverb, expressing manner, time, place, or degree (e.g. gently, here, now, very).
