What happens to the energy flow in a food chain?
The energy initially comes from the Sun - plants (producers) use this energy to photosynthesise. Food chains show different trophic levels, stages at which energy is transferred; as energy flows along a food chain only some is used for growth.
1 of 5
How do you work out the energy efficiency of an energy transfer?
The energy used for growth divided by energy supplied to an animal, multiplied by 100, gives you energy efficiency.
2 of 5
What is a pyramid of biomass?
A pyramid of biomass shows the mass of the organisms so as the trophic levels increase, the biomass of organisms decreases.
3 of 5
How can energy be lost in an energy transfer?
Energy can be converted into less useful forms ('lost') by heat loss due to respiration, egestion (of faeces) and excretion of CO2 and urea.

Why is vegetarianism better than meat eating?
Humans would have a better energy efficiency if they were vegetarians as there would be only one consumer in a food chain, meaning that food chains would have one trophic level (connecting producers to humans) so more energy would be conserved.
