Energy Definitions

The key definitions for the Energy Section of the Unit 2- Chains, Energy and Resources. Taken from past papers, textbooks and revision guides.

?
Enthalpy Change of Combustion
(Enthalpy change) when one mole of a substance is completely combusted.
1 of 13
Endothermic
Reaction in which energy enters the system (from the surroundings).
2 of 13
Activation Energy
The minimum amount of energy needed for the reactants to react
3 of 13
Enthalpy Change of Reaction
Enthalpy change when the number of moles of reactants as specified in the balanced equation react together.
4 of 13
Average Bond Enthalpy
Enthalpy change when one mole of bonds of gaseous covalent bonds is broken.
5 of 13
Le Chatelier's Principle
The position of equilibrium will shift so as to minimise the effect of any change in conditions.
6 of 13
Enthalpy
The heat energy stored in a chemical system.
7 of 13
Exothermic
Reaction in which energy leaves the system (into the surroundings).
8 of 13
Enthalpy of Formation
Enthalpy change when 1 mol of a substance is formed from its constituent elements.
9 of 13
Hess' Law
If a reaction can take place by more than one route an the initial and final conditions are the same, the total enthalpy change is the same for each route.
10 of 13
Rate of Reaction
The change in concentration of a reactant or product in a given time.
11 of 13
Boltzmann Distribution
The distribution of energies of molecules within a sample at a given temperature.
12 of 13
Dynamic Equilibrium
An Equilibrium within a closed system where the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the backward reaction resulting in constant concentrations of products and reactants.
