Why was theatre so popular?
It was inclusive. Everyone from peasants to the queen could visit the theatre.

It was secular (non-religious). Everything was made up not to encourage religious violence.

Non-religious plays like comedies and mystery plays. Elizabethan sense of humour was rude and vulgar

Acting Licence
1572 all actors had to have an acting licence and have a lord as their supporter.

Groups like Chamberlain's men, Leicester's men and The Queen's men (supported by Elizabeth I herself) arose.

Why were The rose and The Globe built outside London's city walls?
London authorities refused to allow plays within the city.

Opposition to theatre
Seen as places where drunkenness, crime and immoral acts took place.

People believed disease would spread

Puritans believed free time should be spent praying and studying the bible.
