Electrocardiograms (ECG)
Measures the electrical activity in the heart by using sensors attached to the skin
This produces a trace
1 of 11
(P interval) P wave
Shows when atrial depolarisation is happening
Shows the start of atrial contraction in Atrial systole
2 of 11
QRS Complex
Shows when ventricular depolarisation is happening
Shows the start of ventricular systole
At the same time, atrial depolarisation is happening but is hidden by the QRS complex
3 of 11
T wave
Shows when ventricular repolarisation is happening
Shows when the heart is relaxing in cardiac diastole
4 of 11
PR interval
Is the time between the first deflection of the P wave
The first deflection of the QRS complex
5 of 11
ST interval
The first time between ventricular depolarisation and repolarisation
6 of 11
Tachycardia
Increased heart rate
Peaks of QRS complex are regular but close together
Typically over 100 bpm
7 of 11
Bradycardia
Decreased heart rate
Peaks of QRS complex are regular but further apart
Slower than 60 bpm
8 of 11
Ventricular Fibrillation
No PQRST visible
Ventricles ‘quiver’ - contraction is not controlled/coordinated
Very little blood pumped out of the heart - can lead to cardiac arrest
9 of 11
Sinus Arrythmia
Irregular heart rate
Peaks of QRS complex not regularly spaced
Linked with breathing - faster when breathing in, slower when breathing out
10 of 11
Flat line
No PQRST visible as no electrical activity in the heart
Heart not beating
11 of 11
