interference competition
one organism will prevent another from using a particular resource, e.g. competition between predatory organisms for dead prey; less common
1 of 9
density-dependent limiting factors
cause the survival rate of an individual to decrease with increased population density
2 of 9
alpha diversity
compares the number of species in a particular area/ecosystem; e.g. 200 tree species in 100 ha forest compared to 1000 tree species in 100 ha of the Amazon
3 of 9
gamma diversity
compares the diversity of the entire landscape e.g. Kenya vs Britain
4 of 9
beta diversity
compares the differences in species composition between sites; calculated as [gamma diversity/average alpha diversity]
5 of 9
latitudinal diversity gradient
describes the pattern that species richness decreases with distance from the equator
6 of 9
species-area relationship (SAR)
implies that species richness increases with the area sampled; the tropical biome is the largest biome and so this can support more species
7 of 9
natal dispersal
migration from birth site to breeding site
8 of 9
breeding dispersal
movement from one breeding site to another
9 of 9
