Ecological Terminology (+biodiversity definitions)

?
Species**
A group of individuals of common ancestry that closely resemble each other, and are normally capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring.
1 of 16
Population
A population is a group of organisms from the same species living in the same habitat at the same time
2 of 16
Habitat
The habitat is the place where an organism lives
3 of 16
Community
A community is the name given to all the organisms of different species living in a habitat
4 of 16
Environment
The environment is the surroundings of an organism and it is made up of the abiotic (climatic/edaphic) and biotic factors that surround and organism
5 of 16
Ecosystem
All the organisms together with their environment is known as an ecosystem
6 of 16
Ecological Factors
These have an effect on the distribution of organisms in any environment. These factors can be divided into climatic, edaphic or biotic.
7 of 16
Climatic Factors
Conditions linked directly to the climate such as temperature, light intensity, light quality, day length and availability of water
8 of 16
Edaphic Factors
Factors linked to the soil of an environment. These include; pH, availability of macronutrients, availability of micronutrients and aeration of soil
9 of 16
Biotic Factors
These are factors relating to the living part of the environment and include competition between organisms, predation and accumulation of waste
10 of 16
Ecosystem Diversity
This represents the variety of ecosystems within the biosphere- the part of the Earth and its atmosphere that is inhabited by living organisms
11 of 16
Genetic Diversity
This refers to the diversity of genes within a species quantity
12 of 16
Classification Vs Taxonomy
The arrangement of organisms into groups is known as classification and the science/study of classification is called taxonomy
13 of 16
Biodiversity
A reflection of both the number of species in an area and how evenly distributed the numbers of living organisms are spread across the range of species present
14 of 16
Organic Pollution
The pollution of water by organic material. Organic pollutants include sewage, slurry and silage effluent
15 of 16
Eutrophication
The gradual and long-term nutrient enrichment of waterways, in particular nitrates and phosphates
