Dissolved substances

?
How can dissolved substances move into and out of cells?
By diffusion
1 of 10
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the spreading of particles of a gas/ substance in solution, resulting in a net movement of particles from a region of a higher concentration to a region of low concentration.
2 of 10
what is meant by the 'random movement of particles'?
All the particles are moving and bumping into each other and this moves them all around randomly.
3 of 10
What happens when there is a greater difference in concentration?
Faster the rate of diffusion
4 of 10
How does oxygen get into cells for respiration?
The oxygen passes through cell membranes by diffusion.
5 of 10
What is the difference between two areas of concentration called?
The concentration gradient.
6 of 10
Does diffusion occur DOWN a concentration gradient or UP a concentration gradient?
Down a concentration gradient.
7 of 10
What happens on the rate of diffusion when there is an increase in temperature
An increase in temperature means that the particles in a gas/solution move more quickly, diffusion takes place more rapidly as the random movement of particles speeds up.
8 of 10
How are individual cells adapted to make diffusion easier and more rapid?
Increase in surface area of the cell membrane - so there is more room for diffusion to take place
9 of 10
Explain why so many cells have folded membranes along at least one surface.
By doing so, the area over which diffusion can take place is greatly increased. Therefore, increasing the rate of diffusion.
