What were Andropovs strategies in suppressing dissidents?
Allowed dissident artists to emigrate. 100,000 dissidents left S.U. Gave formal warnings to ppl to get them to conform. 70,000 ppl recieved warnings. Intimidated ppl, sent bulldozers to destory illegal art exhibition 1974.

Failed to stamp out opposition. Homemade, self published samizdat magazines contained poetry that USSR said was counter revolutionary. Had to be cautious w/ western dissidents. So physicist Sakharov stayed free.
