1 of 14
What are the two forms of diabetes?
Diabetes 1 and Diabetes 2.
2 of 14
What are the two situations in which someone suffers from diabetes?
If they are insulin dependent (cannot produce insulin themselves) and if your receptor cells no longer respond to insulin.
3 of 14
What is type 1 diabetes?
When a person is unable to produce insulin naturally.
4 of 14
When does type 1 diabetes normally start?
childhood.
5 of 14
What can cause type 1 diabetes?
An autoimmune response where the body's immune system attacks it's own cells - to cause diabetes type 1 the cells attacked are the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans.
6 of 14
What is type 2 diabetes?
When the glycoprotein receptors on the body cells lose their responsiveness to insulin. Or it can be due to an insufficient amount of insulin being produced
7 of 14
What can cause type 2 diabetes?
Obesity.
8 of 14
List some of the symptoms of diabetes?
High blood glucose level, high glucose level in the urine, increased thirst and hunger, need to urinate excessively, genital itching or reoccurence of thrush, weight loss or blurred vision.
9 of 14
How do you control type 1 diabetes?
By injections of insulin.
10 of 14
Why can't insulin be taken by mouth?
Because it is a protein and so would be broken down by the digestive system.
11 of 14
How is medication for type 1 diabetes administered?
Through injection, the dose of insulin must be equal to glucose consumption.
12 of 14
How are blood glucose levels monitored?
Through the use of bio-sensors.
13 of 14
How is type 2 diabetes treated?
By regulating the intake of carbohydrate in the diet and matching this to the amount of exercise taken. This may also be supplimented by injections of insulin, or other drugs which absorb glucose from the intestine.
