developing new medicines

?
a good medicine is...
safe, effective, stable, successfully taken in and removed from the body
1 of 9
developing a drug
this can take up to 12 years and cost £350 million
2 of 9
first stage of drug testing
researchers target a disease then test their drugs to be toxic in the lab if not, they are then tested on cells, tissues and whole organs
3 of 9
the second stage of drug testing
the drugs are now tested on animals to see how they effect whole living organisms it also gives information on possible doses and side effects
4 of 9
Clinical trials part 1
they are then tested on human volunteers who are first given low doses to check for side effects.
5 of 9
clinical trials part 2
the drugs are then tried on a small number of patients to see if it treats the disease.
6 of 9
clinical trials part 3
if the drug has passed all the tests larger clinical trials will take place to find the optimum dose of the drug.
7 of 9
placebo
this does not contain the drug or medicine, the doctors and patients do not know who got which until the trial is complete. Often the placebo contains a different drug so they are not deprive of treatment for taking part in the trial.
8 of 9
double-blind trials
some patients agree to take part and are given either a placebo or the new drug, th patients health is then monitored extremely carefully
