What happens when dead organisms break down?
They turn into simpler chemical i.e minerals and carbon dioxide and are recycled and used by living plants for growth
1 of 15
Give four factors that make the decay process faster
1. More micro-organisms 2. More oxygen available 3. Temperature increased 4. There is some moisture
2 of 15
How do Gardeners use the decay process?
They use it to make compost from plant material, the process can take on this but is sped up when the compost bin is placed in the sun, mixing the contents to let oxygen in and adding moisture
3 of 15
What happens to dead and decaying plant material and why is it an advantage?
Dead and decaying material is broken up into small pieces by earthworms, maggots and insects. This is an advantage bc it increases the material’s surface area to make it easier for other decomposes to digest it
4 of 15
Complete the sentence: Compost is a ______ _____
Natural fertiliser
5 of 15
How is biogas produced?
The energy in plant biomass can be released by anerobic bacteria which produces biogas
6 of 15
Where is biogas produced?
In marshes, septic tanks and sewers
7 of 15
How can biogas be used in everyday life?
It can be used to provide a cheap fuel source for cooking, heating, electricity and fuel for vehicles.
8 of 15
What is used for biogas production?
Generators as they hold rotting organic material (dung, farm and garden waste) and bacteria
9 of 15
What does biogas contain?
Methane (50-75%), Carbon dioxide (15-45%), small vapour and miscellaneous gases
10 of 15
What is the optimum temperature in: a) fungi b) bacteria
a) 37 degrees C b) 25 degrees C
11 of 15
What happens to the rate of decay when enzymes reach their optimum temperatures?
Decay is faster
12 of 15
Complete the sentence: As microorganisms respire ____
Heat is released, the detritus gets hotter and decay is faster
13 of 15
What causes decay in compost heaps?
Aerobic bacteria respite using oxygen to release energy for growth and reproduction. The more oxygen present the more decay happens
14 of 15
What do Bacteria and Fungi live on?
Dead material as they’ve secrete digestive enzymes onto the food to digest it into soluble substances that can be absorbed. This is called extracellular digestion because it happens outside cells
