The rise of the nuclear family has lead to joint conjugal roles. They said that equal and shared responsibilities would be the future norm in British families.

Why did Ann Oakley (1974) criticise Willmott and Young?
Their study only required men to do a few things round the house to qualify for joint roles and they overlooked the amount of time spent on housework eg. 10 minutes of washing up compared with 1 hour of ironing.

They were unequal. Women take on a double burden of being a housewife as well as having a paid job.

It is a social construction (which came about after industrialisation) because they were not allowed to work in factories so it became the social norm for women to stay at home and do all of the housework.
