What is hardware?
The physical components of a computer system
1 of 21
What is software?
The programs that control and make use of the hardware
2 of 21
What is system software?
Performs the tasks needed to operate the hardware: OS, utility progrms
3 of 21
What is application software?
Software for user benefit: word processor, internet browsers and games
4 of 21
What is the operating system?
The essential software that links the hardware and other software together and generally manages rhe computer system
5 of 21
What does the OS handle the management of?
Processors, memory, I/O devices, applications, security
6 of 21
Explain the von neumann architecture
You can break a computer system down into four components: main memory, the ALU, the CU and input and output devices
7 of 21
What is the role of the main memory?
The area in the computer where data is stored that is directly accessible by the CPU
8 of 21
What is the role of the ALU?
Carries out logical, shift and arithmetic operations
9 of 21
What is the role of the control unit?
Coordinates all the activities taking place inside the CPU
10 of 21
What is the role of the clock?
Contols the speed at which instructions and fetched, decoded and executed
11 of 21
What is the role of the bus?
A collection of wires through which data is transmitted from one component to another
12 of 21
How does clock speed effect the performance of the CPU?
The greater the clock speed, the faster the instructions will be executed
13 of 21
How does number of processor cores effect the performance of the CPU?
A PC with a multi-core processor will operate faster when executing many task at the same time
14 of 21
How does cache size effect the performance of the CPU?
Because the processor has to access main memory less often, it can work faster so the CPU performance increases
15 of 21
How does cache type effect the performance of the CPU?
The higher the level of cache, the faster the processing speed
16 of 21
What are the differences between RAM and ROM?
RAM is volatile; ROM is non-volatile. RAM stores the data currently in use; ROM stores the BIOS required at start-up. In RAM memory can be written to and read from; in ROM memory can only be read.
17 of 21
What is the difference between main memory and secondary storage?
Main memory is volatile; secondary storage is non-volatile. Main memory can be accessed by the processor; secondary storage can't
18 of 21
Why is secondary storage required?
It is needed to store all the programs on a computer and the operating system as it is non-volatile
19 of 21
What is cloud storage?
Saving data in an off-site storage system maintained by a third party
20 of 21
What are the advantages of cloud storage?
You can access the data anywhere; you can share the data easily; backup is thr responibility of the provider

Report

for the last one you can only access cloud storage if you have access to internet/wifi but apart from that good stuff
