What does the CPU stand for? What can it also be referred to as?
Central Processing Unit.
Also known as the brain of the computer.
1 of 18
Describe what the CPU does.
The purpose of the CPU is to process all the data on the computer.
2 of 18
What is the CPU made up of? What state can these be in?
The CPU is made up of transistors, or switches, that can be in different states – on or off.
3 of 18
What is Binary? Why do computers use binary?
Binary is a number system that only uses two digits: 1 and 0.
For a computer to process it, data must first be converted into binary.
4 of 18
What are clock rates? What are they measured in?
With every tick of the clock, the CPU can process one piece of data or execute one instruction.
The CPU clock speed is measured in cycles per second. 1 cycle per second is also known as 1 Hertz.

What is the name of the basic operation of a CPU?
The Fetch-Decode-Execute Cycle, or commonly shortened to the Fetch-Execute Cycle.

What is the name of the memory used by the CPU? What does it stand for?
RAM
Random Access Memory

What is a storage device?
A piece of computer equipment that information can be stored on.
15 of 18
What does HDD stand for?
What does SSD stand for?
Hard Disk Drive.
Solid State Drive.
16 of 18
What is the difference between HDD and SSD?
A hard disk drive is a traditional storage device that uses mechanical platters and a moving read/write head to access data. A solid-state drive is a newer, faster type of device that stores data on instantly accessible memory chips.
