Competition and Environmental Change

?
What do plants need from their environment and other organisms in order to survive and reproduce?
Light, space, water and minerals (nutrients) from the soil.
1 of 8
What do animals need from their environment and other organisms in order to survive and reproduce?
Animals need space (territory), food, water and mates.
2 of 8
What is a result of organisms competing with other species for the same resources?
There's not enough resources for one of the species, and so the population of that species decreases.
3 of 8
How do living factors change the environment?
Change in occurrence of infectious diseases, change in the number of predators, change in the number of prey or availability of food sources, change in the number or types of competitors.
4 of 8
How do non-living factors change the environment?
Change in average temperature, change in average rainfall, change in level of air or water pollution.
5 of 8
Describe one way in which environmental changes can affect animals and plants.
Population size increases - if the number of prey increases, then there's more food available for predators, so more predators survive and reproducee, and their numbers increase too.
6 of 8
Describe one way in which environmental changes can affect animals and plants.
Population size decreases - the number of bees in the US is falling possibly due to: pesticides having a negative effect on them, less food available (aren't as many nectar-rich plants around) and more disease - new pathogens or parasites.
7 of 8
Describe one way in which environmental changes can affect animals and plants.
Population distribution changes - a change in distribution means a change in where an organism lives. E.g. distribution of bird species in Germany is changing because of a rise in average temperature.
