To see if LTM is the same as STM and the acoustic similarity of words makes it harder to remember than semantic similarity
2 of 10
Method
Male and Female Uni Students. 4 word lists. List A - Acoustically similar. List B - Matched with group A (control) not acoustically similar. List C - Semantically similar. List D - Matched with group C (control) not semantically similar.
3 of 10
Interference task
15 mins reading numbers to block effect of the STM (serial position effect, displacement, interference)
4 of 10
Results
No group showed forgetting. List D did better than list C so semantic similarity makes it harder to learn. LTM is based on meaning of words not effected by acoustic similarity like STM. They work separately
5 of 10
Generalisability
Only Uni students
6 of 10
Reliability
Lab experiment with cause and effect relationship and controls - reliable
7 of 10
Applicability
Acoustic similarity helps to learn things in STM and LTM isn't effected by it but is by semantic similarity
8 of 10
Validity
Lab conditions - Artificial task
9 of 10
Ethics
Follows guidelines - brief and debrief
