Explain the One Child Policy

Set up in 1979, vert strongly encouraged families to have 1 child. No marriage before 24. If you have 1 child then your given benefits, longer maternity, better housing, free education. If you have more than one, heavy fines, no fines.

What did the one child policy cause?

Sterilisation programmes, forced abortions, gender imbalance, kids had no uncles and aunts. Policy has prevented 400 mil births. Fertility rate dropped from 5.7 in 1970 to 1.8 today

What is the Policy like now?

Relaxed, in some rural areas people can have 2nd child if 1st a girl or disabled. Same applies if one parent has disability or both are only children. Standards of living have increased as there are less people.

China could have ageing population in future, may stop policy in 2020
