Pilcher in western Europe, childhood and adulthood is separate, children have rights, adults have responsibilities but there is no clear age on when children become adults as it differs for all cultures.

Ariès examined historic artwork and found the concept of childhood is 300 yrs old and before they would work if they were physically able and dressed the same as adults before ur changed after industrialisation

Shorter- society changed to have a functional fit with the society, so when society wanted to decrease infant mortality rates and increase education families became child-focused, having shorter families compared to insurance children before hand.

post modernists argue that children and adults have a closer relationship and is more dependable then adult ones, which is why adults focus on children more.
