What is the imitation theory?
This is that children learn language through copying others and imitating others

It is important in the phonological development, children develop regional accents suggesting imitation

Children do not pick up grammatical structures, kids normally only use the words they understand so if they imitate all words would be spoken, if the kid is deaf they cannot imitate - theory doesn't work in that situation

This is that children are born with the ability to learn language

Chomsky - who believes in the LAD meaning that every child is born with the mechanism to implant language, requires stimulus and enables a child to recognise basic structures

This theory is that language is acquired because it is necessary, and children need/want to describe their environment and express their felings
