What is Electrolysis?
Breakdown of a substance containing ions by electricity
1 of 5
What is an Electrolyte?
A liquid containing free moving ions, that is broken down by electricity in the process of Electrolysis
2 of 5
What happens during Electrolysis?
Positively charged ions move towards the negative electrode & vice versa
3 of 5
What is Oxidation?
Oxidation is the loss of electrons; it takes place at the positive electrode because negative ions must lose electrons to become neutral atoms
4 of 5
What is Reduction?
Reduction is the gain of electrons; it takes place at the negative electrode because positive ions must gain electrons to become neutral atoms
