atoms and elements-everything is made out of atoms-very small particles. Each atom has a nucleus made out of protons and neutrons, but around the nucleus there is orbiting electrons. There is about 100 different elements with chemical symbols.
examples- Sodium is NA, Carbon is C and iron is FE. All elements are arranged on the periodic table with ones with similar properties.
1 of 5
Atomic structure-proton +1 Neutron 0 Electron -1. Atoms as a whole have no overall change because they have equal amounts of protons and electrons.
When atoms lose electrons to form positive ions, non metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions. Atoms in molecules are held together by covalent bonds.
2 of 5
You can show what has happened in a chemical reaction with word or symbol equations. Chemical symbol equations should always be balanced.
one side-Number of atoms of each element on reactants side---the other-Number of atoms of each element on products side.
3 of 5
Crude oil-isn't very useful on its own but is a mixture of a lot of compounds and some are very useful. A mixture has to have 2 or more compounds that are not chemically combined. The properties in the mixtures keep unchanged they can be separated by
distillation. Most monocles in the oil are carbon and hydrogen. They are called Hydrocarbons, they can vary in size which can change what they are used for.
4 of 5
Fractional distillation-Crude oil is separated into different parts. The hottest over 400oc is used for Bitumen to make roads. The coldest are refinery gases like propane and butane.
Ethanol-is a clean fuel and can be hard to store in big amounts because its a gas. Ethanol-it is renewable but can only be grown in a hot climate.
