?
What are fossil fuels and the disadvantages of relying on them?
Fossil fuels are finite reasources that are nonrenewable. Disadvantages include all of the readily extractable reasources will be used up the the future, and our reliance on politically uinstable countries could cause price rises and wars.
1 of 6
How does fractional distillation work?
Crude oil can be separated due to the hydrocarbons in different fractions have different sized molecules and therefore boiling points, allowing them to be separtated by changes in temperature causing the one with higher boiling points to exit.
2 of 6
What is cracking?
The process which turns longer chain hydrocarbon molecules into shorter ones to meet the demand.
3 of 6
How does incomplete combustion differ from complete?
complete occurs when a fuel burns in plenty of oxygen, emmitting more energy, carbon dioxide and water. Incomplete occurs when there is not enough oxygen, creating carbon monoxide or carbon, and water.
4 of 6
What is clean air made up of?
78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.035% carbon dioxide.
5 of 6
What is a catalytic converter?
A device fitted in a car which reacts carbon monoxide with nitrogen oxide, making nitrogen and carbon dioxide. It needs a catalyst.
