Element
A substance made up of only one type of atom.
1 of 14
Compound
A substance made up of two or more types of atom chemically joined together.
2 of 14
Molecule
A substance made up of at least two atoms, the same or different, that are chemically bonded.
3 of 14
Proton
A sub-atomic particle with a positive charge, that is found in the nucleus.
4 of 14
Neutron
A sub-atomic particle with a neutral charge, that is found in the nucleus.
5 of 14
Electron
A sub-atomic particle with a negative charge, that is found in the outer shells of an atom and is smaller than a neutron or proton.
6 of 14
Atomic Number
The smaller number in the periodic table, which describes the number of protons/electrons.
7 of 14
Atomic Mass
The larger number in the periodic table, which describes the total number of particles in the nucleus.
8 of 14
Period Number
The period number describes the number of shells in each atom, it is in rows.
9 of 14
Group Number
The group number describes the number of electrons in the outer shell of the atom, it is in columns.
10 of 14
Noble Gases
Noble gases are found in group 0 and are unreactive due to having full outer shells, eg.neon, argon, helium.
11 of 14
Ionic Bonding
A chemical bond formed when one atom (a) gives up one or more electrons to another atom (b) in order for both atoms to gain full outer shells - making atom A have a positive charge and atom B a negative charge. A is always a metal and B a non metal.
12 of 14
Covalent Bonding
The bonds formed when atoms join together by sharing electrons in order to gain a full outer shell. Only for non-metals and non-metals bonding.
13 of 14
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element which have different numbers of neutrons in the nuclei, eg. Chlorine
