Atomic Number
The number of PROTONS in the NUCLEUS of an atom.

The SUM of the number of PROTONS and NEUTRONS in an atom.

The AVERAGE MASS of an atom relative to the mass of an atom of the CARBON 12 ISOTOPE which is defined as 12.

The SIMPLEST RATIO of atoms of each element in a compound.

The ACTUAL number of atoms of each element in a molecule.

Ionic Bond
The ELECTROSTATIC ATTRACTION between oppositely charged ions.

Covalent Bond

Dative Covalent/Co-ordinate Bond
A covalent bond in which both of the shared electrons are provided by the SAME atom.

A LATTICE of POSITIVE IONS surrounded by a SEA of DELOCALISED ELECTRONS.

The power of an atom to WITHDRAW ELECTRON DENSITY towards itself from a COVALENT bond.

A molecule that ONLY contains HYDROGEN and CARBON atoms.

An atom or group of atoms which when present in different molecules causes them to have SIMILAR CHEMICAL PROPERTIES.

Structural Formula
Shows the unique arrangement of atoms in a molecule in a simplified form WITHOUT showing ALL the bonds.

Isomer
A molecule with the same MOLECULAR FORMULA but in which the atoms are arranged differently.

Chain Isomer
Compounds with the same MOLECULAR FORMULA, the same FUNCTIONAL GROUP but a different CARBON SKELETON.

Functional Group Isomer
Molecules with the same MOLECULAR FORMULA but different FUNCTIONAL GROUPS.

Position Isomer
Molecules with the same MOLECULAR FORMULA, the same CARBON SKELETON and the same FUNCTIONAL GROUP but with the functional group at a DIFFERENT POSITION on the carbon skeleton.
