what happens when paints change colour at different temperatures?
mixture is cold it turns green. warm it turns yellow. thermochromic paint
1 of 11
how do paints glow in the dark?
phosphorescent paints glow in the dark because they absorb and store energy then release it as light over a period of time
2 of 11
what is in paint and what does it do?
pigment- colour solvent-thins the paint evaporates away binding medium- stick the paint to the surface
3 of 11
what is volitile?
evaporate easily
4 of 11
why doesnt water dissolve nail varnish in terms of particles?
the attraction between the water molecules is stronger than the atteraction between water molecules and the nail varnish molecules. the attraction of the nail varnish molecules is stronger than the attraction between water molecules and nail varnish
5 of 11
how do oil paints dry?
solvent evaporates, the binding medium dries formng a skin, the skin sticks the pigment to the surface
6 of 11
how do emulsion paints dry?
water evaporates and water droplets join to make a continuous film, binding medium dries forming a skin, it sticks to the surface
7 of 11
what is a colloid?
most paints are colloids, little bits of solids disperssed (NOT DISSOLVED) take years to sink, they are too small too.
8 of 11
explain how perfumes work in terms of particles?
volatile. liquids with energetic/Fast moving particles at room temp. weak attraction between particles so forces of attraction are easily overcome. means particles with energy can escape the attraction to other molecules becoming gas
9 of 11
how do you make an ester?
alcohol mixed with an acid = ester// alcohol+acid--ester+water eg. ethenol+ethanoic--ethyl ethanoate+water
10 of 11
how do emulsifiers work?
2 parts to the molecule- hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail, allows oil and water to mik e.g. mayonaise
