Describe how crude oil was formed?
The remains of sea plants and sea animals that died and fell to the bottom of the sea, their remains covered by sediment, as sediment was covered by more sediment it started to change to rock because of increased pressure and temperature
1 of 5
How fractional distillation can be used to seperate crude oil?
You get crude oil that has different chain lenghts with different boiling points and heat it into the fractional column the longer chains will condense first and drain out the bottom the shorter one will condense later nearer to top where its cooler
2 of 5
What properties effect the long chain lengths?
more viscous, less volatile, less flammable, not kept as liquid under pressure
3 of 5
What properties effect the short chain lengths?
less runny, more flammable, more volatile, gases can be kept as a liquid under pressure
4 of 5
If an alkane contains three carbons, how many hydrogen atoms will it contain?
C3H8
