Chemistry C2 3.1 The mass of atoms.

?
What is the relative mass of protons and neutrons?
Protons and neutrons have the same mass and so the relative masses of a proton and a neutron are both one.
1 of 16
What is the atomic number of an atom?
It is its number of protons (which equals its number of electrons).
2 of 16
What is the mass number of an atom?
It is the total number of protons and neutrons in its nucleus.
3 of 16
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons. They have the same chemical properties but different physical properties because of the different masses. Some isotopes are unstable and radioactive.
4 of 16
What is the mass of an electron in relation to a proton or neutron?
The mass of an electron is very small compared with a proton or neutron and so the mass of an atom is made up almost entirely of its protons and neutrons.
5 of 16
What is the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom called?
Its mass number.
6 of 16
What must the number of protons in an atom always be the same as?
The number of electrons, but there can be a different number of neutrons.,
7 of 16
What must atoms of the same element all have?
The same atomic number.
8 of 16
What are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons called?
Isotopes.
9 of 16
What are the number of neutrons in an atom equal to?
Its mass minus its atomic number.
10 of 16
How can the mass number and atomic number of an atom be shown?
It can be shown with the mass number at the top before the symbol and the atomic number at the bottom before the symbol.
11 of 16
Why do we count only protons and neutrons to calculate the mass number of an atom?
The mass of an electron is very small compared to that of a proton or neutron.
12 of 16
How many protons, electrons and neutrons are there in an atom of 19 above 9 before F?
9 protons, 9 electrons, 10 neutrons.
13 of 16
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element or atoms with the same atomic/proton number that have different numbers of neutrons.
