3 examples of fossil fuels
crude oil, coal, gas
1 of 12
What are non renewable fuels
fuels that take a long time to be produced and that cannot be replaced quickly
2 of 12
What does LPG contain
propane and butane gases
3 of 12
Describe oil
mixture of many hydrocarbons
4 of 12
which bonds break and which don't during boiling
intermolecular bonds break and covalent bonds don't break
5 of 12
explain why fossil fuels are non renewable, finite resources
it takes millions of years for them to be produced and we use them very quickly so is limited. we are using them faster than they are being made
6 of 12
what fractional distillation does
seperates liquids with different boiling points
7 of 12
fractions obtained from crude oil
gasoline, naptha, kerosene, diesel, petrol, residue
8 of 12
describe how fractional distillation works
crude oil heated at high temp, crude oil vapour evaporates and condenses at various temps and seperates in the fractionating column - fractions with low boiling point at top (gases), fractions with high boiling point at bottom (solid)
9 of 12
political problems with crude oil - (1)
as oil gets used up more, prices will increase. countries with big stocks may keep them for their own use and stop selling them.
10 of 12
political problems with crude oil - (2)
countries with most amount of oil will have power over others - able to choose who to supply the oil to and who not- cause political conflicts between countries
11 of 12
political problems with crude oil - (3)
harder for countries without huge amounts of oil to get hold of it. may have to rely on politically stable countries for their supply
