Chemistry

?
Name the centre of an atom and what it contains
Nucleus, Protons and neutrons
1 of 16
What is the overall charge of a nucleus (positive negative or neutral
positive because of the protons
2 of 16
Where do you find electrons in an atom?
Moving around the nucleus on electron shells, the volume of their orbits determine the size of the atom
3 of 16
Comment on the charge, size and mass of an electron
Charge -1 ,size very small, mass virtually 0
4 of 16
Explain why atoms have neutral charge
They have the same number of protons and electrons the charge on the electrons is the same but opposite so the charges cancel out
5 of 16
How is an ion different to an atom
an atom ha s no overall charge whereas an ion does, an ion has a different number of proton than an electron
6 of 16
What does an atomic number of an atom tell you
Its the amount of protons
7 of 16
What does an atoms mass number tell you
The combined number of protons and neutrons (you can therefore find the number of neutrons by subtracting the atomic number from the mass number
8 of 16
What is an element
It is a substance made up of atoms with the same number of protons in their nucleus
9 of 16
What is an isotope
An isotope is an element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
10 of 16
What is relative atomic mass
An average mass taking into account the different masses and abundances (amounts of all the isotopes) that make up an element.
11 of 16
Equation for relative atomic mass
Sum of (isotope abundance x isotope mass number) / sum of abundances of all isotopes
12 of 16
What is a compound
Compounds are substances formed of two or more elements held together by chemical bonds
13 of 16
What is an ion
A compound formed of a metal and a non metal
14 of 16
Explain ionic bonding
The metal atoms loose electrons to form positive ions. The non metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions. The opposite charges positive and negative of the ions mean that they are strongly attracted to each other.
15 of 16
Explain covalent bonding
When a compound is formed from non metals each atom shares an electron with another atom.
