Hydrogen test
If a lighted splint is placed in hydrogen it will create a squeaky pop sound.
1 of 18
Oxygen test
Oxygen will re-light a glowing splint.
2 of 18
Atoms contains... and a nucleus, which is made from... and...
protons and neutrons
3 of 18
Atoms have... charge
no
4 of 18
In an atom, the number of protons (in ...) is always... as the number of electrons (in ...)
in nucleus. the same. in shells
5 of 18
Does Ions or atoms have an uneven number of protons and electrons and why?
Ions because they lose or gain an electron, the proton number doesn't change.
6 of 18
You find the no. of electrons and protons at the... of the periodic table
bottom
7 of 18
How do you work out the number of neutrons?
no. of neutrons=mass number-protons
8 of 18
What does the number at the top on the periodic table represent?
number of protons and neutrons in nucleus.
9 of 18
Who created the periodic table and when was this?
Mendeleev in 1869

Name 5 physical properties of metals
conduct electricity, conduct heat, high melting/boiling point, malleable, ductile
11 of 18
Name 5 physical properties of non-metals
don't conduct electricity, don't conduct heat, low melting/boiling point, not malleable, not ductile
12 of 18
What metals are in group 1?
alkali metals
13 of 18
What is group 7?
halogens
14 of 18
Properties of alkali metals
density is low, most float. Inside is shiny. Can cut into metal with knife. Kept in oil to prevent from reacting with oil. All look dull. Melting/boiling point is lower than many other metals.
15 of 18
Alkali metals with oxygen
oxygen causes the surface of the metal to turn dull by forming a layer of oxide. The oxide forms quicker as we go down the group.
16 of 18
Alkali metals with water
The metal floats, moves and fizzes. Metal with water creates hydrogen. The metal creates alkali as it reacts with water (purple with universal indicator)
17 of 18
Safety precautions of alkali metals with water
use safety goggles, use a small piece of metal in the water, use tongs to hold metal.
