Learning to read is based off a series of small steps from small to complex. The focus is on spelling and word learning.

Skills based approach
Teachers teach directionally and the focus is on phonics. Reading is assessed alone. Some examples are letter names and sounds lessons, ways to say sounds.

Top Down Approach
Emphasis is on language from whole to parts. This is a child centred approach to learning

Whole language approach
Language is purposeful. We need to immerse children in reading and writing events, not just taught to. Encompasses all 4 cueing systems (Graphophonics, Syntatic, Semantic and Pragmatic)

Transactional Theory
Considers readers intentions and context of reading using texts. This is a social activity and invites readers to think about text in own way.

Reader Response Model
Readers transact with the text, creating new understanding and meaning. This is best with books that address significant issues to make connections.

A view of reading including code breaking, participating in meaningful making, using texts functionally and critically analysing texts.

Links learning and use of language as it allows users to question way things are.
