System Software
: controls the hardware of the computer as well as the operation on how it runs e.g. windows, Apple , android.
1 of 19
Application Software
the programs that we use every day so we can perform certain tasks e.g. Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
2 of 19
Device Driver
a program that can communicate with a certain device that can be connected to your computer e.g. installation driver (install software) (can be a CD with the printer) put into the computer so that your printer can now communicate with your computer.
3 of 19
File Management
Common sense; moving files, deleting files, creating files.
4 of 19
Operating Systems
controls the operations of the hardware in a computer system and manages all other software. E.g windows
5 of 19
User Management
Where the computer can have multiple log-on accounts, restrict certain people from certain files e.g. Mr Thompson screen is green and can access loads of files who ever we can’t.
6 of 19
Peripheral Managment
controls the communication between peripheral devices that are linked to our computers. Peripheral devices are keyboards, a mouse and a printer for example.
7 of 19
Multitasking
when the operating system can do more than one task at once e.g. having multiple windows open at one time and being able to minimize windows onto the task bar or listening to music while you’re working on a word document.
8 of 19
Memory Management
the operating system has to have memory management to keep count of how much storage the user has used. This is all in temporary memory in the RAM.
9 of 19
User Interface
one of the ways we interact with a computer system
10 of 19
Utility Software
a type of system software. It manages, maintains and controls the computer resources. Most utility software is designed to carry out a singular task, or very small number of tasks. It is generally built into the operating system, but it can also be i

Encryption Software
This is used to encrypt data so if it gets intercepted then they cannot open the data because it is locked by a private key. The encryption key is to scramble the plain text. Now the text is called cipher text. It can only be opened with the correct

Defragmantation
a process that reduces the degree of fragmentation. It does this by physically organizing the contents of the mass storage device used to store files into the smallest number of contiguous regions (fragments, extents).
13 of 19
Data Compression
The process of compression of a file to reduce the data file size. There are two main types of compression algorithm: lossy and lossless.
14 of 19
Lossy
This is when it is compressing the file it PERMANENTLY REMOVES some of the data in the file. This can make a slight difference in quality of colours in a photo. The main uses of lossy compression is audios, video’s and image’s.
15 of 19
Lossless Compression
: does not remove any of the original data from the file to reduce the size of it. When lossless compression is used to reduce the size of a file, the file can be restored to the original form. Lossless compression is used when it is vital that the f

Back Up's
Backing up is the process of making and storing copies of files in case of equipment failure or other damage that could cause loss of data. Files are backed up in the event that the data is lost so that they can be restored at any time
17 of 19
Full Back Up
all the files and folders selected for backup will be backed up. This type of backup is normally carried out as an initial backup of files, as all of the files will need to be copied. This kind of backup can take a long time to be completed,
18 of 19
Incremental Backup
• People may want to just back up the files that have changed since their last backup.
