(Chapter 13) Plant Hormones

?
What is a tropism?
A growth movement in response to a stimulation.
1 of 9
What are some of the different forms of tropism?
Hydrotropism (response to water), phototropism (response to light) and geotropism (response to gravity).
2 of 9
What is positive tropism? Negative?
Growing towards a source (positive) or away from it (negative).
3 of 9
What is auxin?
A plant hormone responsible for root elongation. It has a negative tropism to light.
4 of 9
If light is directly above a plant shoot, how will it grow?
It will grow straight up as auxin moves away from the light at an equal rate down both sides of the plant.
5 of 9
If light is to the side a plant shoot, how will it grow?
It will lean towards the light as auxin will travel down the side of the plant furthest away from light and that side will grow more, tilting the plant in the way of the light.
6 of 9
What effect does auxin have in a plant root?
It inhibits growth, the exact opposite of its effect in the shoot.
7 of 9
What is propagation?
Incresing the number of something.
8 of 9
What are some of the uses of plant hormones?
Weed killers, rooting powder, tissue culture, fruit ripening and gibberellins. How thee work/are used is detailed on the paired info cards.
