Cells and Microscopy

?
Give 2 differences in structure between bacterial cells and animal cells?
Animal cells structure contains a nucleus, ribosomes and Mitochondria. However bacteria cells structure contains a single loop of DNA instead of a nucleus and plasmids. Also Bacteria cells are much smaller than animal cells.

An onion cell is o.o75mm wide. The image of the cell is 7.5mm wide. What magnification was used to view the cell?
Magnification= image cells/real size magnification = 7.5/o.o75 Magnification = 100

Why might you add a stain to a microscope slide?
To make parts of the cell easier to see through the microscope.

Describe how a root hair is specialised for its function?
The "hairs" give the plants a bigger surface area for absorbing water and minerals from the soil.
4 of 22
Describe the events of the cell cycle that need to occur before mitosis can begin?
It increases the amount of sub-cellular structures. Then the DNA is replicated so there is a copy for each new cell.
5 of 22
How can stem cells be used to preserve rare plant species?
Copies of the plant can be made by taking stem cells from the meristems of the plant and growing them into new, genetically identical plants.

'The bladder is an organ'. Explain what this means?
It means that a group of different tissues that work together to perform a certain function.
7 of 22
What type of cell are bacteria - prokaryotic or eukaryotic.
Prokaryotic
8 of 22
Name 5 subcellular structures that both plant and animal cells have.
Nucleus, ribosomes, mitocondria, cytoplasm and a cell membrane
9 of 22
What 3 things do plant cells have that animal cells don't have?
A cell wall, A vacuole and chloroplasts.
10 of 22
Where is the genetic material found in: a) animal cells b) bacterial cells
a) in the nucleus b) a single loop of DNA and plasmids
11 of 22
Which has a higher resolution - a light microscope or a electron microscope?
A electron microscope
12 of 22
What is cell differentiation?'
It is where a stem cell turns into a specialised cell.
13 of 22
Give to ways a sperm cell is adapted for swimming to the egg.
It has a long tail and lots of mitocondria to provide energy for swimming.
14 of 22
Why does a nerve cell look how it is?
They are long so they can cover more distance of the body and they have branches so they can connect with other cells.
15 of 22
What are chromosomes?
Chromosomes are x-shaped coils of DNA.
16 of 22
What is the cell cycle?
Thw cell cycle is where cells divide to make new cells.
17 of 22
What do multicellular organisms use mitosis for?
They uses mitosis to grow and develop.
18 of 22
Give one way that embryonic stem cells could be used to cure diseases.
They could replace faulty cells.
19 of 22
Why might some people be against using human embryos in stem cell research?
Some people may think that an embryo is still a human being.
20 of 22
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of similar cells which work together to carry out a function
21 of 22
Explain what is meant by the term ' organ system'.
An organ system is a group of organs that work together to perform a function.
