Carlsson et Al. 1999 - Network Interactions in Schizophrenia - Therapeutic Implications

?
What was Carlsson's Aim?
To review studies to see if there was a relationship between levels of neurotransmitters, especially glutamate and dopamine, on symptoms of schizophrenia
1 of 13
What is it reviewing?
Research into neurochemical level in schizophrenic patients, the effect of drugs including symptoms of psychosis, Brain Scan evidence to prove dopamine is liked to psychosis
2 of 13
What else?
, the use of recreational drugs that induce psychosis, Amphetamines and PCP's link to schizophrenia, the effectiveness of drug treatment, the method of action in the brain when taking treatment; drugs show other neurotransmitter may have role
3 of 13
What was found out about PCP?
PCP inhibits the action of glutamate- reducing the action of it on the brain and it leads to more psychotic symptoms
4 of 13
What was discovered about Glutamate?
Low levels of glutamate is linked to psychotic symptoms, reduced glutamate leads to an increase in dopamine (link between them), glutamate failure in the cerebral cortex leads to negative symptoms and failure in the basal ganglia; positive symptoms
5 of 13
What was found out about drug treatment and symptoms?
Clozapine is the most effective drug with the least symptoms it reduces both serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain; a link has been found between glutamate and serotonin, people should be diagnosed with hypoglutamatergia not schizophrenia
6 of 13
What did Carlsson conclude?
There are many subtypes of schizophrenia so other drug treatments needs to be developed
7 of 13
Generalisability?
Yes, it looks at other factors that can cause schizophrenia; lots of research done
8 of 13
Reliability?
Used Scientific data but as second had data maybe seen as subjectivity and not reliable
9 of 13
Application?
Can be used to look for other causes of schizophrenia
10 of 13
Validity?
Proved aim; internally valid. High levels of ecological validity as it can be used to help understand schizophrenia
11 of 13
Ethical Issues?
No Participants used; didn't break ethical issues
12 of 13
Psychology as a science?
Evidence found is scientific so is therefore scientific - biological = more scientific
