Monosaccharides
Simplest sugars available
1 of 8
Monosaccharide functions
Energy source, building blocks for larger molecules, intermediates in reactions and constituents of nucleotides
2 of 8
Disaccharides
Two monosaccharides bonded together by a glycosidic bond
3 of 8
Polysaccharides
Large, complex polymers formed from a large number of monosaccharide units, linked together by glycosidic bonds
4 of 8
Test for starch
Iodine solution reacts with starch resulting in a colour change from orange to blue/black
5 of 8
Test for reducing sugars
Solution is heated with Benedict's reagents at 70 degrees Celsius. A positive result shows a colour change from blue to brick red
6 of 8
Test for non-reducing sugars
Solution is heated with HCl (which hydrolyses the glycosidic bonds). NaOH is the added to neutralise. Solution is then heated with Benedict's reagent. A positive test gives a colour change from blue to brick red
7 of 8
Quantitive test for sugars
Solution is heated with Benedict's reagent and a biosensor is used to give a numerical value for a positive test.
