C19- C21

?
what is an exothermic reaction?
one which gives out heat energy to the surroundings
1 of 19
what is an exothermic reaction?
one which takes in heat energy from the surroundings
2 of 19
what is crude oil?
complex mixture of any different hydrocarbons
3 of 19
what is a hydrocarbon?
molecule that is formed from hydrogen and carbon atoms only
4 of 19
what is a homologous series?
family of molecules which have the same general formula
5 of 19
what is the equation for the complete combustion of hydrocarbons/
hydrocarbon+oxygen-->carbon dioxide+water
6 of 19
when does incomplete combustion happen?
when you burn hydrocarbons when there is insufficient oxygen in the air
7 of 19
what are the dangers of carbon monoxide?
it can combine with red blood cells and stop your body from doing its proper job of carrying oxygen around the body
8 of 19
what is soot?
tiny particles released into the atmosphere during incomplete combustion. when they fall back to the ground they deposit themselves as the black dust (soot)
9 of 19
what are the dangers of sulfur dioxide?
when it mixes with the water in the clouds, it forms dilute sulfuric acid which then falls as acid rain
10 of 19
what are the dangers of acid rain?
it causes lakes to become acidic and many plants and animals die as a result. it also kills trees, damages limestone buildings and ruins some stone statues. it can also make metals corrode
11 of 19
what are the dangers of nitrogen oxide?
can contribute to acid rain and can cause photo chemical smog-type of pollution that can cause breathing difficulties, headaches and tiredness.
12 of 19
what are the advantages of using hydrogen as a fuel?
it is a very clean fuel and it is a renewable resource
13 of 19
what are the disadvantages of using hydrogen as a fuel?
a very expensive engine is required and it is a highly flammable gas
14 of 19
what is cracking?
when longer saturated hydrocarbons produced from fractional distillation are turned into smaller more useful ones- it is a thermal decomposition reaction
15 of 19
how is carbon dioxide decreased?
absorption by the oceans and absorption by plants and algae
16 of 19
how is oxygen increased?
photosynthesis
17 of 19
how to test for oxygen?
put a glowing splint in a test tube containing the gas and if oxygen is present, it will relight the splint
18 of 19
how does human activity and greenhouse gases relate?
increasing energy consumption, deforestation and methane and farming
