Bowlby's Theory of Attachment

Just a few little revision cards which outline the key features of Bowlby's Theory of Attachment and what each point entails. Hope this helps. :)

(1) Proximity
Bowlby was very evolutionist in the idea that infants of all species had an innate characteristic to stay close to their Mother to survive. This attachment works from Mother to infant and infant to Mother.

(2) Monotropy
The idea of one single bond between and infant and their primary caregiver. Bowlby believed that this primary caregover should ideally be the biological mother but understood that this was not always possible.

(3) Critical Period
Bowlby believed that if a single attachment was not formed before the age of 2 and a half years, then this bond would never be formed. This is associated with biological characteristics as attachments are innate. Privation would occur.

(4) The Role of the Father
Purely for the emotional and financial well-being of the mother. Not significant for a child's stable, psychological upbringing according to Bowlby.

(5) The Internal Working Model- A mental model of the world
Bowlby believed that the attachment which a child has with their Mother will provide a model for all of their future relationships.

(6) Cognitive Development
Bowlby suggested that our thought processes such as memory, attention and other intelligences develop during attachment formation.
