Blood vessels

?
What do the arteries do?
They carry blood away from the heart
1 of 22
Explain the properties of the arteries...
They have thick elastic and muscular walls to help maintain the high pressure
2 of 22
Why is the endothelium folded?
It allows the artery to expand
3 of 22
What time of blood do the arteries carry?
Oxygenated blood. Apart from the pulmonary arteries that carry deoxygenated blood into the lungs.
4 of 22
What do the arteries branch into?
Arterioles
5 of 22
What do arterioles branch into?
Capillaries
6 of 22
What are the capillaries?
An exchange surface for substances like glucose and oxygen
7 of 22
Why are capillary walls only one cell thick?
For efficient diffusion
8 of 22
What do veins do?
Carry blood to the heart at a low pressure.
9 of 22
Why do veisn have little elastic and muscle tissue?
Because the pressure is lower.
10 of 22
Why do veins contain valves?
To prevent the back flow of blood
11 of 22
What type of blood do all veins carry?
Oxygenated. Apart from pulmonary veins that carry oxygenated blood to the lings
12 of 22
What is hydrostatic pressure?
Pressure exerted by a liquid
13 of 22
Where does the left side of the heart pump blood to?
The whole body (oxygenated blood)
14 of 22
Where does the right side of the heart pump blood to?
The lungs (deoxygenated)
15 of 22
What does the atrioventricular valves link?
Atria to the ventricles
16 of 22
What is a single circulatory system?
Blood only passes through the heart once in each complete circuit.
17 of 22
What is a double circulatory system?
Blood passes through the heart twice for each complete circuit.
18 of 22
What is a closed circulatory system?
Blood is enclosed in blood vessels
19 of 22
What is a open circulatory system?
Blood isn't enclosed in blood vessels all the time
20 of 22
What is the advantage of a double circulatory system?
Heart gives the blood an extra push between the lungs and the rest of the body. This makes the blood travel faster, so oxygen is delivered to the tissues more quickly.
21 of 22
What is meant by 'myogenic'?
It can contract and relax without receiving signals from nerves.
