What are the four main parts that blood is made out of?
Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
1 of 15
What is blood plasma?
Liquid part of blood, it carries blood cells through blood vessels and contains many dissolved substances such as carbon dioxide and glucose.
2 of 15
What are white blood cells?
Part of the immune system which attack pathogens in the body.
3 of 15
What are platelets?
Fragments of larger cells. Function is to cause blood to clot when a blood vessel has been damaged. Clot blocks the wound and prevents pathogens getting into the blood
4 of 15
What are red blood cells?
Contain haemoglobin to carry oxygen around the body.
5 of 15
How are red blood cells adapted to their function?
Have a bioconcave shape, meaning it has a larger surface area so oxygen can diffuse in and out of the cell more easily. Cell has no nucleus so there is more room for haemoglobin.
6 of 15
What are the three types of blood vessels?
Arteries, veins and capillaries.
7 of 15
How are veins adapted to their functions?
Large space for blood to flow back easily into the heart, thinner wall than an artery. Contain valves to stop blood flowing backwards, so that the blood is returned to the heart.
8 of 15
How are capillaries adapted to their functions?
Is one blood cell wide and the walls are one cell thick so products from body cells can diffuse in and out.
9 of 15
How are arteries adapted to their functions?
Arteries have thick walls to withstand high amounts of pressure, as they carry blood away from the heart to the rest of the body.
10 of 15
What parts of the heart carry deoxygenated blood?
Vena Cava, Right atrium, Right Ventricle, Pulmonary Artery.
11 of 15
What parts of the heart carry oxygenated blood?
Pulmonary vein, Left Atrium, Left Ventricle, Aorta.
12 of 15
Do Arteries take blood towards or away from the heart?
Away
13 of 15
Do veins take blood towards or away from the heart?
Towards
14 of 15
What is the path the blood takes in the heart?
Blood enters atrium, the atrium contracts, forcing blood into the ventricles, the ventricles also contract, forcing blood into the arteries, blood flows through arteries and to organs, returning to the heart through veins.
