Biology Unit 1

?
What is the function of a plasma (cell surface) membrane?
Regulates the movement of substances into and out of the cell.
1 of 19
What is the function of the cell wall?
It supports plant cells.
2 of 19
What is the function of the nucleus?
DNA that makes up chromatin inside the nucleus controls the cells activities.
3 of 19
What is the function of the nucleolus?
It makes ribosomes
4 of 19
What is the function of the nuclear pores?
The nuclear pores allow substances to move between the nucleus and the cytoplasm.
5 of 19
What is the function of Lysosomes?
They contain digestive enzymes which break down worn out components of the cell.
6 of 19
What is the function of Ribosomes?
This is the site where proteins are made.
7 of 19
What is the function of the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum? (R.E.R)
It folds and processes proteins that have been made at the ribosomes.
8 of 19
What is the function of the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum? (S.E.R)
It synthesises and processes lipids.
9 of 19
What is the function of Vesicles?
They transport substances in and out of the cell (via the plasma membrane) and between organelles.
10 of 19
What is the function of the Golgi apparatus?
It processes and packages new lipids and proteins and also makes lysosomes.
11 of 19
What is the function of Mitochondria?
They are the site of aerobic respiration, where ATP is produced.
12 of 19
What is the function of Chloroplasts?
The site where photosynthesis takes place
13 of 19
What is the function of the Centriole?
It is involved with the seperation of chromosomes during cell division.
14 of 19
What is the function of Cilia?
The microtubules allow the cilia to move. This movement is used by the cell to move substances along the cell surface.
15 of 19
What is the function of Flagellum?
The microtubules contract to make the flagellum move. Flagella are used like outboard motors to propel cells forward.
16 of 19
What are Prokaryotic cells?
They're single-celled organisms, they are smaller and simpler, e.g. Bacteria
17 of 19
What are Eukaryotic cells?
They are more complex cells and they include all plant and animal cells.
18 of 19
Name 3 differences between Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes.
Prokaryotes are smaller than Eukaryotes. Prokaryotes have no nucleus, the DNA is free in the cytoplasm whereas there is a nucleus present in Eukaryotes. Prokaryotes have fewer organelles and no mitochondria, whereas Eukaryotes have the opposite.,....
