BIOLOGY 4: Diffusion, Osmosis and Active Transport

?
What is diffusion?
The passive overall movement of particles from a region of their higher concentration to a region of their lower concentration
1 of 9
What does 'passive' mean?
It takes place 'without needing energy'
2 of 9
What is osmosis?
The overall movement of water from a dilute to a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane
3 of 9
What is a partially permeable membrane?
A membrane that only allows certain substances to diffuse through it
4 of 9
How do plants take in water?
By osmosis
5 of 9
Why in plants, is water drawn to the roots by osmosis?
There is usually a higher concentration of water in soil than inside the plant
6 of 9
What is active transport?
The overall movement of chemicals across a cell membrane from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration using energy released by respiration
7 of 9
What do plants use diffusion for?
Photosynthesis - the gases pass in and out of plant leaves
8 of 9
What do plants use active transport for?
To move minerals from the soil into the root cells
